The OCA Regional Forum for West Asian NOCs 2006 was held in Aqaba Jordan on May 4 – 5. Vice president Manuel Silvério chaired the forum on behalf of OCA president Sheikh Al-Fahad Al Sabad.
Participants in the forum include Prince Feisal Bin Al-Hussein, President of Jordan Olympic Committee, James Macleod representing the International Olympic Committee, representatives of the NOCs of Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Yemen and Palestine, as well as representatives of the Doha Asian Games Organising Committee (DAGOC) and MAIGOC.
“On behalf of his Execellency Sheikh Al-Fahad Al Sabad, President of the OCA, I would like to extend the warmest welcome to you all to the Forum. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to meet once again and to share the latest information about the events of the OCA, matters that relate to your zone, the latest on the Olympic Solidarity and the World Anti Doping Association (WADA),” said Manuel Silvério.
“I hope this is the beginning of the many international conferences that will be held in Jordan,” Prince Feisal Bin Al-Hussein expressed. “Sport builds bridges which bring people together, this is why forum like this is important. Sports have no boundaries; it is neither a political nor religious device. Being the leaders of sport industry, we must do more to spread the spirit of Olympics. Wish best of luck for 2006 Doha Asian Games, Macau 2007, 2nd Asian Indoor Games and Changchun 2007 Asian Winter Games.”
IOC representative Macleod then made a financial report of the Olympic Solidarity in the meeting. The program was founded by IOC to support and assist its members for the promotion of local sports development with financial aid. So far, assistance has been granted mainly to international and Asian athletes who are going to participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games by means of educational and technical assistance aiding training programs. Recently, the committee has been organizing administrative training programs to its executives as well as developing financial assistance to all NOCs for the promotion of the Olympic Games.
Zhang Liwei, professor of Psychology Institute of the Beijing Sport University, shared his conclusion in the research on the “relationship between external self and satisfaction of living”.
The two-day agenda also includes the standard report of the OCA Executive Committee and WADA on anti-doping, and progress reports by the DAGOC and MAIGOC. In addition, the candidates India and Incheon will submit their application files to the IOC for the 2014 Asian Games.
