1,420 Athletes from 10 Countries and Regions to participate in the Inauguration Games of the Association of the Portuguese Speaking Olympic Committees in Macau in 2006

  Athens, 24 August 2004 - The inauguration Games of the Association of the Portuguese Speaking Olympic Committees (ACOLOP) will gather approximately 1,420 athletes of who will represent the 10 member National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of ACOLOP in Macau, China in August 2006.

  Already sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee and founded during the Athens Olympic Games, ACOLOP carries the goal to connect Portuguese speaking countries and regions through sport.

  According to Mr. Manuel Silvério, the 1st Vice President of the Macau Olympic Committee, there will be six sports in the sport program of the 1st ACOLOP Games in 2006, including Athletics, Basketball, Table Tennis, Beach Volleyball, Taekwondo and Futsal, with the last two sports consisting of only mens events. The Games is scheduled from 20 to 25 August 2006. According to Mr. Silvério, the ACOLOP Games will be held in the facilities built for the 4th East Asian Games; and further added, ''Macau presents an array of high quality venues as well as personnel of international standard for the Games. Even though Macau, China is relatively distant to the other Portuguese Speaking countries and regions, the Games will be able to effectively strengthen the existing friendship among the brother countries and regions, as well as to consolidate the sport exchange between them.''

  Mr. José Vicente Moura, the President of ACOLOP and also the President of the Portuguese Olympic Committee, considered that the establishment of ACOLOP has fulfilled the dream of the Portuguese speaking world. He expressed that besides promoting the sports exchange among countries and regions, ACOLOP will allow these countries and regions from now on to have higher significance in international meetings. The ACOLOP is the means to strengthen and enhance sport exchange among the 10 NOCs, and to promote the cultures of each member country and region through the Portuguese language.
